April 2000 saw the beginnings of a musical movement that has all but become its own genre.
Technology had just started to shape the way we listen to music, and a lone producer set off to Louisiana to visit the Gospel Music Workshop of America, armed with 5000 leaflets a mini disc player (remember the mini disc?) and 7 changes of clothes.
One week later following encounters with luminaries such as Kirk Franklin, Donald Lawrence and Tramaine Hawkins an unexpected invitation to speak to a collection of nationwide DJs opened a debate about the future of not just gospel music but how we want music in general.
The future was spoken then as though it was light years away, internet radio, radio on demand, the end of the CD, endless downloads, music as we want it.
In a fast paced world, what was a crazy idea yesterday, is standard today and will be advanced upon tomorrow.
SO WHAT IS IT, GARAGE GOSPEL?
First they said it was a 2 step movement, latched on to by gospel DJs as far away as Europe, then they said its kinda broken beat, Jazz Fusion, traditional gospel, then I heard it was funky house. On and on the desire to categorise what thousands have come to own and constantly demand more of has developed a momentum of its own.
“I guess it’s all of that, we didn’t decide, we just made the music people downloaded it and haven’t stopped”.
10 years and 1000′s of downloads later, today marks the relaunch of the Garage Gospel website.
